Cubs send Samardzija to Triple-A

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs are sending right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija to Triple-A Iowa and calling up Justin Berg.

Samardzija lasted just 3 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits as the Phillies won 12-5. The former Notre Dame All-America wide receiver is 1-2 with a 7.81 ERA.

"He's going to be fine because, one, he has the stuff, and two, he has the heart," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said on "The Waddle & Silvy" show on ESPN 1000. "I think he's going to be a real good pitcher for a real long time.

"We'll send him down for two or three starts and get him back here no later than a September call-up."

The Phillies exposed the fact that Samardzija is just not ready for the show. He was struggling with his command all night and was flustered and really had a hard time trying to pitch from the stretch. Maybe more reps in the minors will help this kid along.
Berg was called up earlier this season but has not yet appeared in a major-league game.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
