The Boston Globe is reporting that free agent Forward Shelden Williams has agreed to a one-year contract with the Celtics, according to an NBA source. Williams is expected to sign a deal worth the veteran's minimum salary of $1.306 million.
Williams, 25, was the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks after a decorated college career at Duke. He was a first-team All-American in 2006 and graduated as the program's all-time leader in blocked shots and rebounds.
But the 6-foot-9-inch, 250-pound Williams has struggled in his five NBA seasons; while he plays with an aggressive style, he's undersized for a power forward and not quick enough to play small forward.
After averaging 5.5 points per game as a rookie in 81 contests, he fell to 3.0 ppg in an injury-plagued sophomore season. On Feb. 16, 2008, the Hawks dealt him to Sacramento in package for point guard Mike Bibby.
After playing just 58 games in parts of two seasons with the Kings, he was swapped to the T-Wolves this past February for Rashad McCants and Calvin Booth.
He has a career scoring average of 4.7 points per game. According to Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears, the deal does not affect the Celtics' chances of re-signing Glen Davis.
Perhaps Williams's greatest claim to fame is that he is married to WNBA superstar Candace Parker.
Can someone please tell me how this dude landed Candice Parker???...No justice in this world I tell you!!!
