White Sox acquire Rios on waivers from Jays
Posted using ShareThis
NEW YORK -- Alex Rios showed up at Yankee Stadium and saw his name in the starting lineup Monday night. He left the ballpark a few hours later, on his way to join the White Sox and a pennant race.
The two-time All-Star was claimed off waivers by Chicago and learned the news about 30 minutes before the first pitch between the Blue Jays and New York Yankees. The White Sox assume his entire huge contract while Toronto receives no compensation.

Very, very, very stupid move by the White Sox. I'm sure they thought they were merely blocking a trade by claiming waivers on Rios, and it bit them in the ass big time. Rios is due to make almost $12 million/year for the next 5 years! Outrageous for a player in decline since signing his 7-year contract. Nowadays, $12 million/year gets a team very good talent. The White Sox also have an outfield of Dye, Quentin, and Podsednik already! Can't move any to DH either as they already have Thome, and Konerko plays 1B. Again, very, very, very stupid move.
I agree it is a very puzzling move. I looked up their current outfielders and it appears that Dye is in the final year of his contract (not including the option they hold on Dye) So who knows maybe they're hoping that a change of scenery might do him some good. I'm thinking that he might the fact that the Jays let him go for nothing as a slap in the face and maybe will get him to recommit to this career.
